In the moment, decisions are made by your “hot” brain, which is wired to care only about instant gratification. Future-oriented decisions use your “cool,” which cares about delayed gratification/every goal you have (not just what you want in any given moment). It’s not a guarantee that the hot brain will get it wrong, but it is a guarantee that it’s a lot less likely to get it right.
