Senior Clinical Psychologist

I’m Norman Cotterell, and I’m truly passionate about the work I do as a therapist. With a background that includes an AB in Psychology from Princeton University and a PhD from the University of Delaware, I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn from some of the best in the field. My postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Cognitive Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania, under the guidance of Dr. Aaron T. Beck, MD, was a pivotal moment in my journey.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of being a Founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy and contributing to various large-scale psychotherapy outcome studies, ranging from substance use to panic disorder and the prevention of depression.

Sharing my knowledge and insights is something I genuinely enjoy, which is why I’ve lectured extensively for hospitals, churches, and support groups. I’ve also had the pleasure of conducting workshops not only across the United States but also in Brazil.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my career has been supervising residents and fellows in cognitive therapy. It’s immensely fulfilling to see the next generation of therapists grow and flourish in this field. In recognition of my dedication to teaching, I was honored to receive the O. Spurgeon English Faculty Award for teaching psychiatry residents at Temple University.

At Beck Institute, I currently serve as a faculty member and therapist. My clientele includes older adolescents, adults, older adults, and couples facing a wide array of difficulties such as depression, anxiety, and anger. What clients can expect from treatment with me is a warm, empathetic, and collaborative approach. I believe in the power of a strong therapeutic alliance and work diligently to create a safe and non-judgmental space where clients can explore their thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and behaviors.

I’m a firm believer in the effectiveness of cognitive therapy, and I tailor my approach to each individual’s unique needs and circumstances. Together, we’ll work towards understanding and addressing the challenges you’re facing, helping you build resilience, develop coping strategies, and achieve your personal goals.

I look forward to the opportunity to work with you, to be a part of your journey toward healing and personal growth, and to support you in creating positive change in your life. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or if you’d like to embark on this therapeutic journey together.
